Acupuncture for Menopause in Winnipeg: Hot Flashes, Sleep and Other Common Symptoms

Menopause is a natural stage of life, but the transition can feel very different from one woman to another.

Some women experience occasional hot flashes with few other changes. Others may notice night sweats, disrupted sleep, mood changes, fatigue, headaches, palpitations, or changes in digestion and overall temperature regulation.

At All Balance Wellness Centre in Winnipeg, we often see women looking for acupuncture for menopause in Winnipeg, particularly for concerns such as hot flashes, night sweats, sleep changes, and other menopause-related symptoms.

Why Do Hot Flashes Happen During Menopause?

During perimenopause and menopause, changing estrogen levels affect the body’s temperature-regulation system. As a result, relatively small changes in body temperature may trigger a sudden sensation of heat.

A typical hot flash may begin with warmth in the chest, neck, face, or upper body and may be followed by sweating, flushing, or occasionally chills afterward.

For some women, hot flashes occur mostly during the day. For others, night sweats and sleep disruption are the bigger problem.

And this distinction matters.

Menopause is not simply one symptom called “hot flashes.” Two women of the same age can experience menopause very differently.

Can Acupuncture Help Menopause Symptoms?

Research on acupuncture for menopausal hot flashes has produced mixed results.

Some studies comparing acupuncture with usual care or no acupuncture have found improvements in hot-flash frequency, symptom severity and quality of life. However, when acupuncture has been compared with sham acupuncture, the difference has generally been much less clear. The U.S. National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health summarizes the evidence in much the same way.

However, some women choose acupuncture as part of a broader approach to managing their symptoms, particularly when several symptoms occur together.

We Look at More Than the Hot Flash

When a patient comes to us for menopause-related concerns, the first question is not simply:

“Do you have hot flashes?”

We also want to understand the larger pattern.

For example, are the hot flashes mainly during the day or at night? Is sleep interrupted? Do you wake feeling hot, restless or sweaty? Are you experiencing fatigue, anxiety, digestive changes, headaches, dryness or changes in your general sense of temperature?

This broader assessment helps the practitioner understand what is happening for that individual patient, rather than treating every woman going through menopause in exactly the same way.

What Is an Acupuncture Appointment Like?

At your first visit, your practitioner will review your main symptoms, general health history and other factors that may affect treatment.

Acupuncture uses very thin, sterile, single-use needles placed at selected points on the body. Treatment plans may vary depending on your symptoms and how you respond over time.

Some patients seek acupuncture mainly for hot flashes, while others are more concerned about sleep, stress, headaches, body tension or several symptoms occurring together.

There is no single treatment schedule that is appropriate for everyone.

Acupuncture Can Be Part of a Larger Menopause Plan

Women with significant menopause symptoms should discuss their options with an appropriate health-care provider.

Hormone therapy remains the most effective treatment for bothersome menopausal hot flashes for appropriate candidates, and several evidence-based non-hormonal treatments are also available.

Acupuncture can therefore be considered as a complementary option, rather than an either-or choice.

This is particularly important if symptoms are severe, suddenly changing, affecting daily life, or accompanied by unusual bleeding, chest pain, significant shortness of breath or other concerning symptoms.
